In the spirit of Halloween, let’s talk about travel horror stories. Lost luggage on your way to a wedding. A delayed flight that makes you miss your cruise. A sudden illness that comes with a hospital bill.
Picture this: You land in Barcelona for your best friend’s wedding, but your suitcase with all your clothes and toiletries doesn’t.
Or, you’re on a long-awaited cruise with your entire extended family celebrating mom’s 70th when a medical emergency sends you to the nearest hospital with a bill bigger than the trip itself.
Maybe bad weather means a canceled flight and leaves you scrambling for a hotel at midnight.
The list goes on, and it’s enough to keep you up at night. That’s why I always recommend travel insurance. My preferred partner is Faye because their app makes it easy to track coverage, file claims, and get reimbursed instantly, turning nightmares into minor hiccups.
Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR)
Standard travel insurance covers specific reasons for cancellation, but sometimes yours isn’t one of them. Faye offers a Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) policy which lets you cancel your trip up to two days before departure for any reason at all. The best part? You can recoup up to 75% of your non-refundable trip costs.
Digital Wallet
Faye’s Digital Wallet is a secure card within the Faye app that connects to your personal accounts. If a component of your trip is disrupted and you qualify for a reimbursement ASAP, Faye will send funds to your Wallet so you don’t have to wait to be paid back. You can also transfer the funds directly to your bank account.
Now that we’ve handled the truly scary stuff, let’s have some Halloween fun. One of my favorite travel trends is spooky travel, which involves visiting hotels, destinations, or sites rumored to be haunted and ripe with lore. Think Salem, Savannah, and NOLA, plus international spots like Edinburgh and Romania. In the spirit of the season, below are a few of my favorites. The Stanley Hotel in Colorado offers a walking tour, which includes a lot of Stephen King, some history, and plenty of storytelling. You’ll also be able to see The Shining Suite in the restored 1909 Caretaker's Cottage.
Also in Colorado, The Hotel Jerome is said to be haunted by a young boy who drowned in the former hotel’s swimming pool. Apparently he still causes mischief by leaving puddles and footprints around the property.
There’s a story about a haunted mirror that once hung in Marilyn Monroe’s suite at The Hollywood Roosevelt. After she died, people reportedly saw a sad blonde appear in its reflection, only to turn around and find no one there. The mirror hangs on the stairwell going up from the lobby bar.
